As-Salaam Alaikum! (Peace be unto you!)
The Nation of Islam (or N.O.I. for short) literally means a “Nation of peace and righteousness through submission to God”. This prevailing theme of peace in the NOI is based on three principles: freedom, justice and equality.
The Nation of Islam in the western hemisphere was declared an independent Nation July 4, 1930 by Master W. D. Fard Muhammad. After beginning his work of teaching and training he met Elijah Poole, a Georgia-born sharecropper with a third-grade education, and transformed him into one of the greatest scholars and theologians the world has ever known. He was able to take former criminals, drug addicts, pimps, hustlers and orphans stand them up and put them on a path to recovery and reform. These renewed individuals presented themselves solely as Muslims and rid their lives of drugs, alcohol, poverty and want. Today the Mission of Elijah Muhammad is carried out by Minister Louis Farrakhan, his National Representative. In 1995, He led the Million Man March, a gathering of 1.8 Million Black men in Washington, DC where he called for a Holy Day of Atonement & Reconciliation.
Who was this man Master Fard Muhammad? Who is the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad and the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan? We believe they are the fulfilment of the long-awaited appearance of the “Mahdi Messiah”, Jesus “The Christ” and Jesus “The Comforter” described throughout all the Scriptures (Torah, The Gospels of Bible, and Holy Qur’an).
The Nation of Islam has always taken a ‘hands-on approach’ to our faith in Allah (God). We believe that prayer alone is not sufficient to curb the worsening condition of our communities but we believe that faith, prayer and action are the key components to real change in our communities. Mere belief accounts for nothing. Our mandate is to be in the streets where the people are. This was the message of Jesus. We believe we have been given the keys to unlocking the complex divisions between religious groups, address apostasy and heal the turmoils caused by dogmatic zeal and ritualistic fervor without substantive understanding.
Since 1930 the Nation of Islam has operated as a shining beacon for the rehabilitation, reform, reeducation, retraining and resurrection of the Black man and woman of America and the diaspora. Our message of peace has expanded to embrace all the oppressed and indigenous peoples of the world. We invite you to learn more about the Teachings of the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad through his National Representative the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan and we encourage you to attend one of our meetings.
